Diakon supports local social ministries

As part of its annual program to promote congregation-based, community-focused social ministry efforts, Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries has awarded grants to two local social ministries.

The Welcome Center based at Holy Communion, Philadelphia received $15,000 to support its ministry of providing a place of hospitality and rest for people living on the streets of Center City. In a year The Welcome Center has served more than 5,000 persons. Along with lunch and clothing from its "boutique," the ministry has provided housing resources, assistance with recovery from addiction, reunification with families, individual and group support, and help with training and employment.

Feast of Justice Ministries based at St. John, Mayfair, received $16,000 to support its food pantry and counseling, education and life-skills programs. The grant will assist the agency in growing its ability to provide holistic care, transforming the lives of individuals, families and communities.
