October: Rostered Minister Appreciation Month

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

A Message from Bishop Bryan Penman

Dear Beloved Siblings in Christ,

October is recognized as Rostered Minister Appreciation Month, a time to pause and give thanks for the pastors and deacons who walk with us in faith — proclaiming good news, tending souls, and leading communities of hope in a weary world.

We are living through trying times. The noise of our culture too often leans toward fear and violence rather than peace and mercy. In the midst of this, our rostered ministers continue to show up — preaching, praying, organizing, comforting, and faithfully reminding us that God’s love is still made real in our neighborhoods and in our lives.

But let’s be honest: ministry is hard right now. Many pastors and deacons are feeling the strain of these times — emotionally, spiritually, and physically. So, this month, I want to encourage you to find tangible ways to bless your leaders.

Notice the rhythms that lead to stress. Did your pastor just preside over a particularly large or emotional funeral? Offer them an extra day off that week. Did your council just navigate a tough budget conversation? Send a handwritten note of encouragement, or a gift card to a favorite restaurant. Even small gestures of gratitude can breathe new life into tired spirits.

As the church, we are called to care for those who care for us. Encouragement, rest and prayerful support are holy acts of stewardship — not just of our leaders’ wellbeing, but of the gospel itself.

And if you’re reading this and feeling a nudge in your own heart — a stirring that maybe you are being called into ministry — I want you to know the church needs you now more than ever. The harvest is plentiful, and the need for faithful leaders is great. If you’re discerning a call to rostered or lay leadership, I invite you to reach out to Pastor Erika Wesch, our Assistant for Formation, who can walk with you on the journey and share about the new pathways to leadership in the ELCA.

Friends, let’s give thanks this month for the pastors and deacons who serve among us with courage and grace. Let’s surround them with prayer, kindness, and love — the same love that first called each of us to follow Jesus in the way of peace.

With gratitude for your partnership in the gospel,

+The Rev. Bryan Penman
