Lord, In Your Mercy

In the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in US history, we pray:

God, our refuge and strength, we pray for all affected by the shootings in Las Vegas and we grieve over violence in our world. Heal the injured, comfort those who mourn and strengthen those providing aid. Through our struggle and confusion, empower us to work for justice and peace. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

This week, there are so many needs and concerns on our hearts, each precious to God. We pray for supplies and relief for those devastated by hurricanes; for communities impacted by wild fires; for those affected by gun violence; that the world’s leaders work for peace; for those who face oppression because of their race, gender, sexual orientation; for an end to systemic racism and economic injustice.

Here are some prayers that might help your congregation address issues resonating in your community:

Loving God, in the communion of Christ we are joined with the trials and sufferings of all. Be with those who endure the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Help loved ones find each other. Provide assistance to all who need help. Let your love be known through those who work to bring order in the chaos. Help us to shoulder the burden of suffering, and make us bearers of the hope that is your healing gift in Jesus Christ.

Eternal God, amid all the turmoil and changes of the world your love is steadfast and your strength never fails. In this time of danger and trouble, be to us a sure guardian and rock of defense. Guide the leaders of our nation with your wisdom, comfort those in distress, and grand us courage and hope to face the future.

God our creator, through whose providing care we enjoy all goodness and life, turn our eyes to your mercy in this time of confusion and loss. Comfort those who mourn, shine your light on those whose only companion is darkness, and teach us all so to number our days that we may apply our hearts to your wisdom.

Look with mercy, gracious God, upon people everywhere who live with injustice, terror, disease, and death as their constant companions. Rouse us from our complacency and help us to eliminate cruelty wherever it is found. Strengthen those who seek equality for all. Grant that everyone may enjoy a fair portion of the abundance of the earth.

Holy Trinity, one God, you show us the splendor of diversity and the beauty of unity in your own divine life. Make us, who came from many nations with many languages, a united people that delights in our many gifts. Defend our liberties, and give those whom we have entrusted with authority the spirit of wisdom, that there may be justice and peace in our land.
