Mission Support

Local gifts. Global impact.

Congregations of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod are in ministry locally and around the world through a portion of congregational income given to the Synod and ELCA Churchwide Organization as Mission Support.

Together as a Synod, through your Mission Support tithes and offerings, we are preparing new leaders for the church, opening new congregations, encouraging youth to grow in faith through experiences of service and worship, supporting social ministry organizations, schools, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, Bear Creek Camp, and partnership with the Lutheran church in Tanzania. All of this work is being done with only 50% of congregations’ Mission Support gifts.

The remaining 50% is sent to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for churchwide and global ministries. These Mission Support gifts help to plant new worshipping communities across the US, support the work of national ministries such as military chaplaincy, Lutheran Disaster Response, World Hunger Appeal and other resources, and provide for churchwide ministries including theological education, our national system of candidacy and mobility for rostered leaders, development of curriculum and worship resources, etc.

Thank you for helping to change lives and alleviate suffering “glocally” through your Mission Support of the entire Church!

HOW TO TEACH CONGREGATIONS ABOUT MISSION SUPPORT

Generosity logo SEPA

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to Congregation Councils and congregational members who do not understand what the synod and ELCA do with the dollars contributed by our congregations. And often our rostered leaders aren’t sure how to teach the compelling stories that arise from the use of these funds in our synod, across the ELCA and Globally.

Help is at hand! Living Lutheran (our ELCA magazine) recently had an article and a teaching guide to help congregations understand the impact of Mission Support. This can be used as a three or four week series in adult education classes, condensed as part of new member orientation, and adapted for confirmation and youth.

It’s attached here so you can download right now!
