Clergy are on the front line in dealing with mental health issues in their places of ministry. It is common knowledge that folks tend to seek out their pastors, priests, rabbis, and imams far sooner than they would consult with a mental health professional. However, while clergy are often the ‘first responders’ to the demanding human situations of everyday life as well as crisis and life cycle events, they are often not formally trained to deal with the counseling component of their work. Many clergy are afraid that they will do more harm than good. In this workshop, Dr. Stephen Treat will look at some common mental health issues that clergy see in the ministry such as depression, personality disorders, and trauma and will offer some guidelines for addressing these challenging issues in ministry
