The situation in the Horn of Africa is continuing to worsen with now over 12.4 million people in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti being affected. Crops are wilting, livestock are dying and people are suffering as water becomes scare and food prices skyrocket. Many have decided to leave their homes in search of water and food, in Somalia alone nearly 1.9 million people have left home (25% of the population).
The ELCA has been there from the beginning, working through the Lutheran World Federation as they oversee refugee camps in Kenya (Dadaab) and Ethiopia (Dollo Ado). We have also been accompanying our companions, the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) and the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church (KELC). To date the ELCA has committed $1.25 million to provide water, food, shelter and training. As the situation continues to develop we will continue to be present, working through and with companions, continuing Gods work with our hands.
