“People do have a lot on their minds these days, and they don’t mind sharing,” reporter John Rawlins observed introducing the person-on-the-street interview video used at last fall’s “Discover the Secret” conference gatherings.
St. Paul wrote of his response to equally precarious times in Philippians 4, noting that “I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need.” (v. 12)
Using this text as a starting point, Rawlins, a Channel 6 reporter and member of St. John’s, Phoenixville, went on a listening mission from Chester County to North Philadelphia to Center City to hear what issues give people concern, and how they are coping.
“Some thrive. Others struggle to find comfort,” Rawlins concludes. For some, “their secret for finding peace is their faith,” he says. “But for many others comfort comes from things of this world: grandchildren, gardening, giving back to their communities.
The video offers an insightful look into how, and whether, religion helps people have peace, and whether faith is on their radar at all.
