calendar October 2, 2009 in Disaster Response

5 days, 4 disasters, 1 way to help now

As you may have seen on the news, this has been a turbulent and frightening week for the people of Asia.

On Saturday, Typhoon Ketsana slammed the Philippines , leaving hundreds dead and driving thousands more from their homes in search of safety.

On Tuesday, the Pacific islands of Samoa and Tonga were struck by an 8.3 magnitude earthquake triggering a tsunami that washed away buildings and lives, leaving only a “river of mud” behind.

On Wednesday a 7.6 magnitude earthquake toppled buildings, caused landslides, and claimed lives in Indonesia —the death toll continues to rise. On Thursday, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck, causing even more destruction.

To make matters even worse, another, stronger typhoon, named Parma, is headed toward the Philippines and is expected to hit early tomorrow.
