Job Description

St. John’s long-time director of music is retiring.  As we continue to live into this pandemic and the realities that it places on the music aspects of our worship life, we are not looking to fill the director of music position right now.  Our hope is to secure the musical talents of a long term supply musician who will support our worship as it is now.  However, the possibility does exist that as restrictions lessen and more music is permitted to be part of our worship that this supply position could turn into something more substantial.

The primary duties of the long term supply musician are to lead the music ministry of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in a strong partnership with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee in a way that is consistent with our mission, values and theology.  This will include playing at all worship services, planning for worship and arranging for special music within the services.

Reports to: Church Council and is supported by the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Participate in the creative planning of Sunday Worship and Special Services with the Pastor, and with input from the Worship and Music Committee.
  2. In cooperation with the pastor, select, plan and implement the music for all services including, but not limited to: Sunday morning worship as well as special services and music events, e.g., Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, mid-week Lenten services, weddings, funerals, etc.
  3. Create opportunities for the musicians in the congregation to share their talents within worship, which could include picking music, accompanying, rehearsing, etc.
  4. Be an active member of the Worship and Music Committee, and attend committee meetings.
  5. Ensure compliance with copyright law and licenses.
  6. Work within an annually approved Music Budget.
  7. Arrange regular maintenance for the organ and pianos.
  8. Provide music for weddings and funerals as required.
  9. Maintain the music library and robes.
  10. Procure substitutes at church expense for any absences from services (vacation, illness).
  11. Attend staff meetings and be an active part of the staff team.
  12. Communicate faithfully with the Pastor and staff.
  13. In the event that worship needs to return to a virtual reality, we are in the process of upgrading our capabilities within the sanctuary to be able to live stream from the church. This person would still be expected to support worship musically from the church in such a reality.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Skills in worship planning in coordination with the Pastor.
  2. Previous experience leading worship on both organ and keyboard/piano.
  3. Knowledge and familiarity with a wide variety/range of musical styles.
  4. Good organizational and communication skills.
  5. Clear concept of being an integral part of the ministerial team.

COMPENSATION

Annual salary – $12,000
