Job Description

The Director of Music/Choir Director is under the supervision of the Pastor.

The Director of Music will:

  • Consult with the Pastor and the Music and Worship Committee to plan and implement Worship in the Lutheran tradition.
  • Select choir music, liturgical music, and organ music appropriate to the church practices and liturgical season.
  • Provide general guidance to other choir leaders
  • In consultation with the Pastor and other choir leaders, coordinate the use of all vocal and instrumental music to assist the congregation in Worship by preparing a choir in appropriate liturgical music, hymns and anthems, through weekly rehearsal. Arrange with choir leaders and musicians to assist in Worship as planned by the Worship and Music Committee.
  • Recruit, organize and train people to assist the congregation in Worship specifically to seek out and enlist new volunteer choir members and musicians with the assistance of the Worship and Music Committee.
  • Organize and maintain the library of choir music and present requests for the purchase of new music within the budget.
  • Obtain substitute music to lead worship service in consultation with the Pastor as required.
  • Educate choir members to the Lutheran Worship and practice, with the assistance of the Pastor.
  • Play at all Sunday Worship services, all major festivals and special services such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and mid-week services when scheduled.
  • Authorize servicing of the organ, piano and other instruments in the church building.
  • Consult regularly with the Pastor regarding plans for services, including selection of hymns when requested.
  • On the first of the month to furnish to the Administrative Assistant the Hymn selections for the following month (ie January 1st provide for February’s Hymns).
  • Furnish to the Administrative Assistant, appropriate material for the bulletin at least three days in advance.
  • Attend staff meetings as requested, to share in the planning for Worship.
  • Attend meetings of the Worship and Music Committee.
  • Provide a seasonal schedule of music appropriate to the annual calendar

Qualifications

  • Possess professional competence in choir direction and organ and piano playing.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Lutheran Worship practice.
  • Willingness to participate in on-going professional development.
  • Ability to recruit, train and lead volunteer musicians.
  • Ability to work closely with the Pastor and other choir leaders in Worship planning and implementation.

Compensation

  • Based on experience.
  • Time Requirements
  • An average of ten to twelve hours per week which includes four hours per Sunday, choir rehearsals, festival and special days, preparation time, staff meetings and committee meetings.
