Job Description

Position Title: Director, Ministry of Music

Position Status: Part Time Salary (10 hours max per week)                     

Compensation: $8840 per year

The Director, Ministry of Music, at Bethany Lutheran Church shall by responsible for developing and leading the musical witness and vision of the congregation. The Director must be open to playing and exploring the diversity of music, that is available to our renewed and revitalized congregation. Responsibilities include those set forth below; however, reasonable changes in the responsibilities may be made at any time by the Pastor and/or the Church Council.

  1.  Worship Services (approximately 2 – 4 hours per week).
  • Accompany one service each Sunday, 10 am.
  • Accompany Holy Week services (i.e. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, etc.).
  • Accompany festival services that fall during the week (i.e. Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, etc.).
  • Encourage participation within worship by introducing and teaching new hymns and/or service music to the congregation.


  1.  Worship Preparation (approximately 2 – 4 hours per week).
  • Participate with the Pastor and/or representative of the Ministry of Worship in planning the worship services of the congregation (i.e. hymns, settings) – approximately 3 hours per month.
  • Select and prepare music for worship that supports the season, setting and mood of the planned service.
  • Assemble appropriate musical ensemble(s), that would enhance the worship experience – i.e. soloist, instrumentalists, etc. – especially for festival worship services (Christmas Eve, Easter, Reformation, etc.).  Budget is provided.
  • Practice at least two hours per week all selected music for the coming weeks, on appropriate instrument (organ, piano, guitar, etc.).

 3.  Other Responsibilities for the Director, Ministry of Music:

  • Seek out and attend at least one continuing education event per year, in the field of music.
  • Maintain the music library of the congregation.
  • Report to the Pastor and/or Parish Administrator, any needs for the maintenance of the church organ, pianos, and other church owned musical instruments.
  • The first person contacted to prepare and play appropriate music for weddings and funerals held at the church. If the Director cannot accompany the event, she/he will assist in finding a suitable replacement.  Fees for participating in such events, are set by the Director and paid by the organizer of the event.
  1.  As we grow in Ministry, the Council and Congregation seeks to assist the Director, Ministry of Music:
  • By encouraging she/he to propose new ideas, activities, music ventures, etc., that will engage the congregation, and assist our growth in relationship with God and each other.
  • Create an adult or youth choir, hand bells, or further music ministry.
  • Conduct weekly rehearsals as appropriate.
  • As the ministry grows, the Council is committed to reviewing duties and compensation, as needed.

Compensation: $8840 per year – Negotiable based on experience.
