Job Description

Location: Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod Office

Reports to: Synodical Bishop

Position Type: Full-time, salary with full benefits package

Primary Function

The Assistant to the Bishop for Vocations and Leadership/Development Officer is a member of the Executive staff; and works closely with the director of operations, senior accountant, director of mobility, candidacy director, candidacy chair, interim pastors, and Transitional Ministry Development Team.

The responsibilities of the Assistant to the Bishop include managing the protocols and administrative requirements of the Committee of Deans and Candidacy Committee and identifying a strategic process, along with the stewardship committee, to further encourage Synod-wide generosity among our congregations and donors.


·     Attend meetings of Synod staff, Synod Council, Committee of Deans, and Candidacy Committee, and represent the bishop, as necessary, at congregational celebrations, anniversaries, or rostered leader retirements, etc.

·     Work to strengthen relationships between the synod and its congregations and rostered ministers.

·     Arrange regular visits to our congregations to preach; to share the life and activities of our mission together in SEPA Synod while highlighting our interconnectedness and interdependence.

·     Work in partnership with the Bishop and Committee of Deans to inform and support the work of the committee in managing congregational transitions, conflicts, and challenges.

·     Work with the Candidacy Committee in the administration of ELCA and Synod Candidacy requirements.

·     Maintain close working relationship with ELCA seminaries and Churchwide staff.

·     Support Interim Pastors and Transitional Ministry Development Team as they journey with congregations in each stage of transition.

·     Work closely with the Stewardship Committee as staff and attend committee meetings.

·     Coordinate fundraising activities, such as the annual fund and special appeals.

·     Build relationships with synod donors and maintain accurate donor records.

·     Ensure gifts are recorded and acknowledged promptly.


Qualifications and Skills

·      Minister of Word and Sacrament preferred

·      Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred

·      Active member of an ELCA congregation preferred

·      Confidentiality required

·      Knowledge of ELCA Candidacy Process

·      Knowledge of ELCA Mobility Process

·      A willingness to take risks and ability to learn from failures

·      A love for Jesus Christ, His Church, and His people.

·      Passion and skills for networking and relationship building.

·      Sensitivity to the diversity in our synod and willingness to strengthen skills in order to work effectively with all our diverse groups.

·      Exceptional administrative, filing, and recordkeeping skills (paper and electronic files/folders) a must.

·      Ability to set up and maintain confidential file-sharing system.

·      Excellent organizational skills including: time management, delegation, strategic planning, financial management, and ability to create departmental budgets.

·      Organize departmental meetings/events and arrange for appropriate hospitality

·      Proven leadership skills

·      Knowledge of effective stewardship models

·      Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge donor and donation management software required.

·      Ability to read and understand financial reports

·      Excellent oral and written communications skills

·      Adept with Microsoft Office and database management

·      Fluency with Internet, technology, and various social media networks

·      Must have own insured vehicle, current driver’s license, and valid passport

·      Ability to travel to day, evening, overnight, week-long and weekend meetings and events required

·      Commitment to working as a collaborative team member with Synod staff and Synod teams, congregational leaders, institutions and agencies of our synod, and Churchwide staff.
