Job Description

Job purpose
To lead (Preschool/Early Childhood Music, Cherub Choir, Handbell Choir) and support (Children and Youth Choirs, periodic soloists/ensembles) the mission and vision of Trinity Lutheran Church and its music ministry.
Essential Functions

  • Preparation/Planning
    • Coordinate with the Director for Worship and Music, Pastors, and worship planning team to plan, prepare, and lead ensemble music appropriate to each worship service.
    • Prepare lesson plans/piano accompaniments for rehearsals/worship, helping musicians to use their gifts to the best of their abilities.
  • Teaching
    • Teach three Preschool Music Classes one morning/week from October through May. Prepare students to lead a Christmas/End of the Year musical program for the families in December and May, collaborating with the Preschool Directors and Teachers.
    • Teach one early childhood music experience class/week for preschool aged children and their primary caregiver (Musikers in the Making) from September through May
  •  Direct Ensembles
    • Direct the Cherub Choir (grades K-2), including choosing music, planning and running rehearsals, one time per week for 10 months.
    • Direct the Handbell Choir (Trintinnabulators), including choosing music, planning and running rehearsals, one time per week for 10 months.
    • Recruit new choir members, maintain communications lists and communicate with participants and/or parents of participants in each directed choir/ensembles.
  • Other
    • Lead Saturday evening worship (5:30 pm) from the piano one time/month.
    •  Attend monthly staff meetings regularly and weekly worship planning team meetings as necessary.
    • Assist with other music ministry duties, including administrative tasks, as necessary.

    • Possess highly developed piano playing and accompanying skills.
    • Demonstrate experience in teaching music and directing vocal and instrumental ensembles of all ages, as well as the ability to use the voice effectively during rehearsals.
    • Be proficient in conducting and rehearsal techniques.

    • Work effectively to collaborate with both professional and lay leadership. Possess interpersonal skills to attract, motivate, and encourage disciples.
    • Possess effective communication and motivational skills for musicians of all ages.
  • Personal Skills
    • Demonstrate effective organizational skills and excellent time management skills.
    • Exhibit creativity and enthusiasm in carrying out job responsibilities.
  • Training/Experience
    •  Possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Music or comparable experience.
    • 3-5 years of experience in a similar position is preferred.

Working conditions
This position works in an office, school, rehearsal, and worship space environment for a standard work week with weekend and evening hours.

  • Allowances: use of facilities for personal private teaching; additional compensation for weddings and funerals.
