SUMMARY:Faith Communities Are Critical Partners In Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Lutheran Disaster Response invites you to a March 10 day of resiliency building among human services providers\, houses of worship\, and disaster responding organizations. We know in Pennsylvania we are facing more precipitation\, hotter temperatures\, and more volatile weather overall. Not only does our region face more frequent disruptions to daily life because of these types of events\, but we also find ourselves welcoming disaster survivors from outside of our area. In an effort to build resilience to disasters in our communities\, we welcome you to join us on March 10 to both build relationships in our communities so we can together leverage resources when disaster strikes\, and so that we can look to agencies who specialize in disaster response to help bolster local efforts when that assistance is needed. We need all of us! \nLutheran Disaster Response-Eastern PA\, a ministry of Liberty Lutheran/Lutheran Congregational Services\, is a leader in this effort\, along with UCC Disaster Ministries\, Chester County Department of Emergency Services\, and Montgomery County Department of Public Safety. \nFor more information and to register\, please see the attached flyer and please feel free to share. \nDOWNLOAD MORE INFO: Now Open Making Halves Whole Again SEPA VOAD \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED!--ELCA Behavioral Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:ELCA Behavioral Interview Training \nMarch 27 – 28\, 2020 \nLocation: TBD \n  \nThe ELCA Domestic Mission Unit uses a Behavioral Interview to help select leaders to serve as mission developers for new congregations.  The Behavioral Interview process is an extensive interview which attempts to paint a more complete picture of the individual\, their motivations and their gifts for ministry. \nA Behavioral Interview involves more than one interviewer for each interview and so the Domestic Mission Unit is seeking to train additional people in the technique.  In this training\, you will learn about the 15 characteristics that have been identified as important to the characteristics of a leader starting new churches and redeveloping existing congregations.  While most people would not conduct a full behavioral interview in day-to-day life\, the approach to interviewing\, the suggested questions and the approach to processing interview responses can prove fruitful in other areas of life and in other areas of ministry discernment like the candidacy process. \nBehavioral Interviewing is first and foremost a discernment process.  It is a tool used by church leaders and placement personnel to discover if a person possesses the gifts and skills that will allow them to thrive in calls to mission starts or redevelopments.  It is not a pass or fail instrument.  It provides a structure for gathering valuable information which can lead to a highly informed assessment of potential effectiveness in these challenging calls. \nThe training for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod will take place on Friday\, March 27 from 9 AM to 6 PM (including lunch and dinner) and on Saturday\, March 28 from 9 AM to 4 PM (including lunch).  The Domestic Mission Unit will cover the cost of the materials and meals.  If travel costs are an obstacle\, there may be some funding available to help with travel. \nThe Domestic Mission Unit asks that those who complete the training be available to assist with two interviews over the next year (in-person or by Zoom). \nIf you are interested in being trained as a behavioral interviewer or if you have additional questions about the training\, please contact the Rev. William Flippin at wflippin@sepa.org or 770.289.7951 \nYour partner in ministry\, \nRev. Dr. William Edward Flippin\, Jr.\, Director of Evangelical Mission (SEPA)

SUMMARY:Immigration Law Training
DESCRIPTION:The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)\, in collaboration with World Relief\, is offering an intensive five-day Immigration Law training March 30 (all day) through April 3 (all day)\, 2020. The training is being held at the MCC Welcoming Place\, Akron\, PA. \nThe training will be conducted using the curriculum of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC). This course will help to provide the necessary training component for individuals who wish to apply for accreditation from the Department of Justice (DOJ – formerly known as BIA recognition and accreditation). DOJ recognition and accreditation allows non-attorneys working at non-profit organizations to practice immigration law. The course will touch on all areas of immigration law and practice focusing on topics most relevant to those serving and representing low-income immigrants. \nDue to the requirements of the recognition and accreditation application process\, we recommend that only individuals with U.S. citizenship\, lawful permanent residence\, or other long-term immigration status apply for this training. \nAdditional requirements for applying for Department of Justice (DOJ) recognition and accreditation will be discussed during the training week.  Learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Online Clergy Workshop: In Over Your Head in the Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Clergy are on the front line in dealing with mental health issues in their places of ministry. It is common knowledge that folks tend to seek out their pastors\, priests\, rabbis\, and imams far sooner than they would consult with a mental health professional. However\, while clergy are often the ‘first responders’ to the demanding human situations of everyday life as well as crisis and life cycle events\, they are often not formally trained to deal with the counseling component of their work. Many clergy are afraid that they will do more harm than good. In this workshop\, Dr. Stephen Treat will look at some common mental health issues that clergy see in the ministry such as depression\, personality disorders\, and trauma and will offer some guidelines for addressing these challenging issues in ministry\n\nPresenter: Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Treat\, MFT and CEO Emeritus of Council for Relationships\, Ordained in the UCC\nWednesday\, June 3\, 2020\n11:00 am – 1:00 pm\n\nLocation: Online via Zoom Videoconferencing\n\nCost: $15\n\nAny questions can be directed to The Rev. Dr. Dolores Littleton\, Director of the Clergy Track of the Post Graduate Certificate Program\,at dlittleton@councilforrelationships.org.

SUMMARY:Yellow Phase Faith: Questions and Considerations for Houses of Worship
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, the City unveiled Safer at Home\, a plan and executive order outlining the strategy for how Philadelphia will begin to reopen for business when the current Stay-at-Home Order is lifted\, which is expected to occur later this week.  The plan specifically outlines guidance for religious communities. Highlights include: \n\nGatherings of over 25 people are prohibited by the state until the Green Phase. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health recommends that NO gatherings of any size be held until the Green Phase.\nRequire all congregants to mask while on site.\nDO NOT allow choir practice\, performance\, or ANY group singing until public health authorities have given guidance on the safety of group singing. Consider refraining from responsive/group reading as well.\nContinue to offer remote service options even if in-person services resume to offer a safe option to those who need it.\nIf possible\, offer staggered service times to increase physical distancing.\nUse signage\, floor decals\, or other visual cues to encourage individuals and groups to space themselves at least 6 feet from others.\nRope off rows of chairs or pews so that congregants can only sit in every 3rd row.\nFor gatherings where congregants pray on mats\, separate mats by at least 6 feet.\nSeparate the service leader from front row of congregants and from other service leaders as much as possible\, keeping in mind that 6 feet may be inadequate because of vocal projection.\nDo not share items such as communion cups or offertory plates.\nFood and drink should not be served or consumed at services or gatherings until the Green Phase.\n\nTo learn more about the City’s Safer-at-Home Plan\, visit phila.gov/safer-at-home. \nJoin us next Wednesday\, June 10\, at 11am\, for Yellow Phase Faith: Questions and Considerations for Houses of Worship\, a special COVID-19 Update Call for Faith Leaders. Register below. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nREGISTER HERE >

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine
DESCRIPTION:An ELCA Prayer Service for Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine will be available for online viewing at 12 noon Eastern Time on Wednesday\, June 17\, the fifth anniversary of the evening nine people were shot and killed during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, S.C. The service will include leaders from around the ELCA and ecumenical partners\, including episcopal leadership from the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will preach the sermon. We join in a time of repentance\, mourning and prayer as we remember these nine martyrs and renounce the sins of racism and white supremacy. The service can be viewed at https://www.elca.org/emanuelnine. This site also has resources to mark this day in your congregation. \nAs part of the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly\, voting members adopted a resolution designating June 17 as a commemoration of the martyrdom of the Emanuel 9—the nine people shot and killed on June 17\, 2015\, during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, S.C. \nResources to help congregations mark this day can be found at https://elca.org/emanuelnine. Many of these materials were recently produced for this first year of marking the commemoration; among the others are helpful ELCA websites and documents as well as resources from our ecumenical partners. \nIn this time of the pandemic\, many of the resources will need to be adapted for virtual worship\, online conversation\, or individual reflection and devotion. You are invited to use them in whatever ways are most helpful for your local context. \nOur relationship to the shooter\, as well as two of the slain\, reminds us of both our complicity and our calling. Together we confess that we are in bondage to the sins of racism and white supremacy and\, at the same time\, we rejoice in the freedom that is ours in Christ Jesus who “has broken down the dividing wall\, that is\, the hostility between us” (Ephesians 2:14). May God continue to guide us as we seek repentance and renewal\, and racial justice and reconciliation among God’s precious children.
