SUMMARY:Online Clergy Workshop: In Over Your Head in the Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Clergy are on the front line in dealing with mental health issues in their places of ministry. It is common knowledge that folks tend to seek out their pastors\, priests\, rabbis\, and imams far sooner than they would consult with a mental health professional. However\, while clergy are often the ‘first responders’ to the demanding human situations of everyday life as well as crisis and life cycle events\, they are often not formally trained to deal with the counseling component of their work. Many clergy are afraid that they will do more harm than good. In this workshop\, Dr. Stephen Treat will look at some common mental health issues that clergy see in the ministry such as depression\, personality disorders\, and trauma and will offer some guidelines for addressing these challenging issues in ministry\n\nPresenter: Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Treat\, MFT and CEO Emeritus of Council for Relationships\, Ordained in the UCC\nWednesday\, June 3\, 2020\n11:00 am – 1:00 pm\n\nLocation: Online via Zoom Videoconferencing\n\nCost: $15\n\nAny questions can be directed to The Rev. Dr. Dolores Littleton\, Director of the Clergy Track of the Post Graduate Certificate Program\,at dlittleton@councilforrelationships.org.

SUMMARY:Yellow Phase Faith: Questions and Considerations for Houses of Worship
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, the City unveiled Safer at Home\, a plan and executive order outlining the strategy for how Philadelphia will begin to reopen for business when the current Stay-at-Home Order is lifted\, which is expected to occur later this week.  The plan specifically outlines guidance for religious communities. Highlights include: \n\nGatherings of over 25 people are prohibited by the state until the Green Phase. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health recommends that NO gatherings of any size be held until the Green Phase.\nRequire all congregants to mask while on site.\nDO NOT allow choir practice\, performance\, or ANY group singing until public health authorities have given guidance on the safety of group singing. Consider refraining from responsive/group reading as well.\nContinue to offer remote service options even if in-person services resume to offer a safe option to those who need it.\nIf possible\, offer staggered service times to increase physical distancing.\nUse signage\, floor decals\, or other visual cues to encourage individuals and groups to space themselves at least 6 feet from others.\nRope off rows of chairs or pews so that congregants can only sit in every 3rd row.\nFor gatherings where congregants pray on mats\, separate mats by at least 6 feet.\nSeparate the service leader from front row of congregants and from other service leaders as much as possible\, keeping in mind that 6 feet may be inadequate because of vocal projection.\nDo not share items such as communion cups or offertory plates.\nFood and drink should not be served or consumed at services or gatherings until the Green Phase.\n\nTo learn more about the City’s Safer-at-Home Plan\, visit phila.gov/safer-at-home. \nJoin us next Wednesday\, June 10\, at 11am\, for Yellow Phase Faith: Questions and Considerations for Houses of Worship\, a special COVID-19 Update Call for Faith Leaders. Register below. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nREGISTER HERE >

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine
DESCRIPTION:An ELCA Prayer Service for Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine will be available for online viewing at 12 noon Eastern Time on Wednesday\, June 17\, the fifth anniversary of the evening nine people were shot and killed during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, S.C. The service will include leaders from around the ELCA and ecumenical partners\, including episcopal leadership from the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will preach the sermon. We join in a time of repentance\, mourning and prayer as we remember these nine martyrs and renounce the sins of racism and white supremacy. The service can be viewed at https://www.elca.org/emanuelnine. This site also has resources to mark this day in your congregation. \nAs part of the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly\, voting members adopted a resolution designating June 17 as a commemoration of the martyrdom of the Emanuel 9—the nine people shot and killed on June 17\, 2015\, during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, S.C. \nResources to help congregations mark this day can be found at https://elca.org/emanuelnine. Many of these materials were recently produced for this first year of marking the commemoration; among the others are helpful ELCA websites and documents as well as resources from our ecumenical partners. \nIn this time of the pandemic\, many of the resources will need to be adapted for virtual worship\, online conversation\, or individual reflection and devotion. You are invited to use them in whatever ways are most helpful for your local context. \nOur relationship to the shooter\, as well as two of the slain\, reminds us of both our complicity and our calling. Together we confess that we are in bondage to the sins of racism and white supremacy and\, at the same time\, we rejoice in the freedom that is ours in Christ Jesus who “has broken down the dividing wall\, that is\, the hostility between us” (Ephesians 2:14). May God continue to guide us as we seek repentance and renewal\, and racial justice and reconciliation among God’s precious children.

SUMMARY:Gathering for ELCA Leaders - The Untold Story: Black Lutheran History
DESCRIPTION:Being Church in Times of Crisis \nWeekly Online Gathering for ELCA Leaders \nWednesdays\, 1PM Central \nOn July 15\, we are honored to have Rev. Dr. Lawrence J. Clark\, II and Rev. Dr. Richard N. Stewart present with us to share The Untold Story of Black Lutheran History. \nRev. Lawrence (Larry) Clark is unashamedly African American and unapologetically Lutheran. He earned a BA in United States History from San Francisco State University\, an MDiv with an emphasis in Urban & Youth Ministry from Trinity Lutheran Seminary (Columbus\, OH)\, and a DMin with honors from the historic Interdenominational Theological Center (Atlanta\, GA). Rev. Clark is known as one of those singing preachers and is both honored and humbled to serve as the Senior Pastor of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago\, IL. He is one of three chaplains with the Chicago Fire Department and an active ELCA Coach\, while also serving on the Leadership Team for ELCA Coaching. Rev. Clark is married to Darlene Gibson-Clark\, the First Lady of his life and of St. Mark Lutheran\, and they are the proud parents of four children. \nBelieving that the leader in congregational ministry is primarily a communicator\, Rev. Richard Stewart has shaped his ministry and studies around communication and congregational ministry. “As congregational leaders plan\, teach\, preach\, and administer\, they focus on sharing both information and the skills for others to pass on information. That information in written and oral speech\, music\, the pictorial arts\, the theater\, dance\, and in all sorts of human behavior are ways we share the Word of God.” Rev. Stewart is Adjunct Professor and Graduate Advisor in Administration\, Evangelism\, Stewardship\, and Communications at United Lutheran Seminary (Philadelphia\, PA). He earned a BA from Wittenberg University and an MDiv from Hamma School of Theology (both in Springfield\, OH). Rev. Stewart also earned a DMin from Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia\, where he was an Associate Professor for 33 years. He has also been researching African American Lutheran History for nearly 35 years! \nHow have we been church\, with individuals and with communities? How are we being church? How are we called to be church with all people\, with creation\, and in an ever-changing world? \nYou are invited to join this weekly online gathering designed to provide encouragement and support for ELCA leaders across the church. Participants will hear topical presentations related to how we are called to be Church in times of crisis\, as well as an opportunity to be in small group discussions with an ELCA group coach facilitating the conversation. All of this is designed to help us process our feelings in this strange and fearful time and to create a space where we can each name our next most faithful step forward in our unique context. You are welcome to share this invitation with any other ELCA leader\, rostered or lay. #ELCAChurchTogether \nELCA Coaching is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Being Church in Times of Crisis – Weekly Gathering for ELCA Leaders\nTime: July 15\, 2020 01:00 PM Central Time \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/180439412?pwd=WlVwUUxyUE5mY2IxMktHQXFJdGNMdz09\nMeeting ID: 180 439 412\nPassword: 648160 \nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,180439412#\,\,1#\,648160# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,180439412#\,\,1#\,648160# US (San Jose) \nDial by your location\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 876 9923 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\nMeeting ID: 180 439 412\nPassword: 648160
