Part Time: This position anticipates 1,000 hours annually (approximately 19 hours per week), including evenings and weekends

Accountability: The Sexton is directly responsible to the Pastor and works cooperatively with the Property Committee and the Office Manager.

General Description: The Sexton maintains the general cleaning and orderliness of NHELC facilities and is responsible for special facility setups and configurations as required. The Sexton is responsible for ensuring the entire facility is locked/secure at the end of each day’s use, the lights are turned off and the heat/air conditioning is set appropriately.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. General Cleaning

  • Keeps the Sanctuary, class rooms, Multi Purpose Room, Fellowship Hall, Offices, kitchen, bathrooms, and all other interior spaces clean and attractive at all times.
  • Assumes responsibility for general cleaning in relation to weddings, funerals and special events.
  • Places trash appropriately for pick-up at the location(s) identified by the Property Committee Chairperson.
  • Coordinates with church staff members to ensure the efficient operation of the facility.
  • In cooperation with the Property Committee Chairperson will develop and adhere to a regular cleaning schedule.

2. Maintenance

  • Will promptly report any damage or mechanical issues to the Property Committee Chairperson, Office Manager or pre-arranged designate.
  • Will take all reasonable actions to prevent and/or minimize possible damage resulting from mechanical or other failures until a suitable long-term solution can be implemented.
  • Safety
  • Regulate heat, air conditioning, ventilation, and all other systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season, and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Assume daily responsibility for the general security of the entire physical plant, ensuring that all doors and windows are locked, and that all lights are turned off except those required for safety reasons.
  • Comply with all safe procedures for the storage and disposal of hazardous and/or flammable materials.
  • Perform duties and maintain a safe work environment to minimize harm to self or others. This includes but is not limited to keeping hazardous solvents, cleaning machines, tools, buckets and ladders properly stored, and especially away from children.
  • Use proper caution/danger signage while performing duties.
  • Keep steps and sidewalks clear of obstructions, especially snow, ice and leaves.

3. Other

  • Setup or remove furniture, chairs, equipment, etc. for any function as required. If help is needed, the Property Committee Chairperson or their designate is to be contacted for assistance.
  • Order everyday cleaning supplies and/or submit a requisition to the Property Committee Chairperson for all items above $100.00 (one hundred dollars).
  • Control overall supply expenditures based on the guidelines set forth by the Property Committee Chairperson.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Pastor or Property Committee Chairperson.
  • Participate in regular Staff Meetings

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Must have general large facility cleaning experience – church experience a plus.
  2. Physically able to perform the duties of the position.
  3. Task-oriented individual who can work well with minimal supervision and function as part of a team.
  4. Must be dependable, responsible, and self-motivated.
  5. As with other positions of this congregation, the Sexton should have a strong sense of ministry and to the stated job responsibilities.
  6. Must be willing and able to take direction.
  7. Must be willing and able to work weekends and evenings.
  8. Must be willing and able to work alone in the facility.
  9. May be required to work on days off to support weddings, funerals or special events.
  10. Must be willing to take phone calls to support questions about church facility issues to guide maintenance activities.
  11. Must have or be capable of obtaining required background checks
