Assembly 2019: Ingathering

The Women of the ELCA (WELCA) of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod are excited to continue the tradition of gathering quilts and kits for Lutheran World Relief and transporting them to LWR’s warehouse in Maryland. In 2017, we transported more than 500 quilts and hundreds of kits donated by more than 30 participating congregations. From Franconia, the round-trip distance of 300 miles takes more than half a day. You can easily see what a savings this service provides to each of our congregations in terms of time, money, and wear and tear on personal vehicles!

The LWR Ingathering will take place at the Synod Assembly at Franconia Mennonite Church on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Congregations are invited to bring quilts and kits to load on a truck from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. when worship begins. Everyone making a donation that morning is invited to stay for worship and to participate with the assembly as they bless and send the donations out in to the world.

In order to make this Ingathering a success, please consider:

  • Instructions for assembling, packaging and tracking LWR quilts are available on LWR’s website:
  • If your congregation hasn’t participated in the past, consider putting together a few kits or assembling a quilt. Your Assembly delegation can drop off the donation on their way into Saturday morning worship.
  • A contribution of $30 per congregation donating quilts and kits is suggested to cover the shared cost of transporting your donations to the LWR warehouse in Maryland. These donations will pay for the truck rental, gas and tolls, which are currently estimated to be $750. It’s helpful to have these funds in advance.
  • Checks should be written to Women of the ELCA, note Ingathering 2019, and mailed to: Joy Grace, Ingathering Coordinator, 331 Cheswold Road, Drexel Hill, PA 19026
  • Volunteers will be needed on Saturday, May 4 to collect, count and organize the donations, and pack the truck. If you are interested in volunteering, or have any questions or concerns about the Ingathering, please contact Joy Grace at 484-432-8087.
Carefully review the information at website: the instructions from Lutheran World Relief can change from year to year. Decide how God is calling your congregation to share the light of Christ for the sake of the world. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 4, 2019 when we will combine our Synod-wide donations together for Lutheran World Relief.
