Bishop Hanson calls for peace

In these days of terrible violence, death and destruction in Gaza and southern Israel, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) joins its voice with all in the region and around the world who call for an immediate ceasefire. The continuing loss of life, infliction of serious injury and devastation of property will only deepen hatred and divisions, and will serve no good end. Lamenting the recent escalation of violence, only negotiations, leading to a two-state solution, will bring about a durable peace with justice for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Our time will be practical, interactive, and spiritual as we explore what we can do to connect God's reign with our time and our neighborhoods.

In Northeast PA Lou and Kelly's house outside Hazelton was flooded three times from September 2004 to November 2006. Their home could not be salvaged after the last flood, and this family still has a mortgage to pay off and therefore cannot afford to buy another property. Lutheran Disaster Response is working with Lou and Kelly to build a simple structure that will be elevated 8 feet, and lift their future home out of the flood plain. If you have connections that can provide construction materials for free or at a reduced cost, or if you sense God leading you to volunteer or donate to assist this family, contact Linda Frey at 610-847-5775 or lwfrey@epix.net .

Catch the spirit of the 2008 Assembly

The 2008 Synod Assembly heard about missional principles that will shape our common ministry, based on this Biblical formula: "It's God's mission. Jesus is Lord. The Holy Spirit guides us." You can download a bulletin insert reporting on the meeting or get full details and watch video at the Assembly website.

The Assembly also heard Kelly Fryer describe common characteristics shared by congregations that are missionally engaged with their neighborhoods, received Emmaus Road Lutheran Church, and passed a resolution allowing congregations to send an additional youth or young adult voting member to the Assembly.

Can a trip change your life? There's no doubt about it! In August a group of youth and young adults head for an immersion trip to our companion Synod, the North Eastern Diocese of Tanzania. There will be opportunities to see the joys and struggles that are part of everyday life in a culture that is very different and to recognize the joys and struggles that are shared by all people of faith, wherever they may be. These life changing experiences build world changing leaders. Muzuri Safari! Have a great journey!

Bishop's Top 10 Indicators of Healthy Congregations

At the 2007 Conference Conversations I presented this list of indicators of congregational health and vitality. Many of you asked for a way to score your congregation on these indicators, so we have provided this form to allow you to see how your congregation rates in these 10 priority areas of ministry. These are indicators that I and others have found useful in assessing the relative health of a congregation. I invite you to ask your council and other key leaders to rate your congregation's performance in each of these areas, then total the scores and rank them to see which areas your congregation should celebrate, and which might be areas of future growth.
